Ready for 21st century careers?

Project background

Wyandotte County studentsToday's students live in a world of rapid technological change in which the best jobs and most promising careers increasingly require a solid background in math, engineering, technology and science ("METS"). Unfortunately, recent studies suggest that few students have the skills that they'll need to succeed in the new economy. What can the Kansas City region do to remain competitive in the new global economy?

Engaging the Kansas City region

One KC Voice, Public Agenda and the Kansas City Regional METS Leadership Coalition, a coalition of leaders dedicated to supporting METS achievement, are leading a multi-year public engagement initiative to improve METS education and results for students in the region.

The goals of the initiative are to:

  1. Increase awareness of the importance of METS education
  2. Involve community members and leaders to prepare students for 21st century careers
  3. Build capacity to deepen and expand community engagement

Community Conversations

The initiative is partnering with local organizations to carry out a series of exciting Community Conversations involving students, parents, teachers and community leaders around METS education.

Ten communities across the Kansas City region will work with One KC Voice and Public Agenda to host Community Conversations about how to improve opportunities for young people and support economic growth.
