There are three transit providers that operate in the Kansas City region:
Smart Moves is a cooperative plan of the Mid-America Regional Council and the three transit providers. The regional transit plan that resulted from this cooperation is known as the Smart Moves Regional Transit Plan.
Local elected officials and civic leaders have considered many strategies to raise and administer funds for regional transit.
In 2006, Missouri passed legislation that allows Platte, Jackson, Clay, Cass and Buchanan counties the option to jointly raise funds by putting a sales tax on a voter ballot. Similar legislation has not been introduced in Kansas.
Transit could also be funded by municipalities interested in expanding local service.
Transit is an important component of a metro area. Public transit grants mobility to those who do not have access to private transportation, provides transportation options to disabled residents, relieves traffic congestion, influences development (both economic and physical), and ultimately helps maintain environmental quality.
