Students "talk trash" (and recycling)
Bishop Ward students participate in a conversation on recycling. One KC Voice talked with Bishop Ward High School students April 23 as part of its "Landfilled" community discussion series.
One KC Voice is in the process of hosting a total of 31 community conversations across the region on the topics of recycling, landfill capacity and trash disposal costs. The "Landfilled" conversation series officially started in February and is expected to conclude in May.
Eighteen sessions have already been held, and others will be added over the next few weeks. About 250 citizens have participated thus far in the small-group discussions.
Twenty-five of the events are supported by a grant from the MARC Solid Waste Management District. The remaining six of discussions, including this event, are supported by funding from the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan.
Improving math and science education
Nearly 100 participants attended the Wyandotte County Community Conversation on math, engineering, technology and science (METS) education that took place on May 5. The conversation, which was sponsored by Public Agenda and One KC Voice, asked citizens how they thought METS education could be improved in Greater Kansas City.
At least four more conversations will be planned in 2008 as part of the three-year project, which examines how the Kansas City region can improve students' educational opportunities. Area organizations are invited to apply for a mini-grant that will fund a conversation in their communities.
